Mother-Child dynamics explored through plaster

I molded two hands with a smaller hand holding on to the thumb of a larger hand. I chose to use hands because I wanted to evoke an image that represents a self-soothing mechanism, such as hand-holding. I chose this specific gesture because it is inspired by and relates to the respiratory system. When I was younger, I would have moments of anxiety and become short of breath. Holding my mom’s thumb helped me slow my breathing and calm down. Therefore, I wanted to replicate this small moment in time forever in plaster.

Using the subtractive method to alter my plaster cast, I carved the shape of lung tissue cells into the backside of the hands to further highlight the connection between breath regulation and the gesture.
